Caroline is our enigma, an actress of mystery.
I had cast her as the lead in a previous work of mine, a 20 minute film called “The Talking Rain”.
She had what they call screen presence, I don't quite know what that is either, but I know it when I see it so am I am quite content to honor that mystery without undue interrogation !
I invented my cinematic incarnation of Joan of Arc with Caroline in mind, and we developed the visualization of Joan as we made the film.
Caroline Ruttle has that unique ability to build an image in her performance; I liken this to painting or even sculpture, and it suits my visual style perfectly. I think this kind of acting performance has as much or more in common with ancient and ritual theater, or something like Noh, than it does with modern mimetic realism.
